Jonathan Yates is currently the Rocco & Gloria Barbieri fellow at
Villanova University and a member of the faculty of the
Villanova Center for Liberal Education (VCLE). Jonathan came to
Villanova in the Fall of 2005, after completing his dissertation
in Historical Theology at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
While Jonathan’s interests include many aspects of the western
intellectual tradition, his core concerns are theology, the
phenomenon of religious experience, and the
intersection of religion and culture. His area of expertise is
Ancient Christianity, particularly Early Latin Christianity and
the life, thought, and impact of Augustine of Hippo. At
Villanova he regularly teaches the "Augustine and Culture
Seminar" (ACS) for the VCLE, and has developed and taught
both graduate and undergraduate courses in Villanova’s
department of Theology and Religious Studies, including courses
on Augustine and Early Christianity, and in Villanova's Graduate
Liberal Studies Program. Originally from a small town in Georgia, since
late 1993 Jonathan has lived, studied, and taught in Texas,
Belgium, and Pennsylvania. Sports, and particularly
baseball, have always been a part of his life. In fact, Jonathan
has been an
Atlanta Braves fan for as long as he can remember--well before their fabled streak of 14
straight division championships (1991-2005). He is married to
Bess Wellborn, a native of Asheville, North Carolina. Much to Jonathan’s chagrin, Bess
prefers soccer to baseball and, even when in baseball mode,
cheers as hard for the Red Sox as she does
for the Braves …
